At the University of Miami, we understand the personal commitment it takes to pursue a master’s degree. Whatever your goals, we are here to do everything we can to help you advance your career or pursue a career of purpose.

The College of Arts & Sciences offers several opportunities to help fund your graduate education, including tuition waivers, third-party fellowships, and student loans. We offer some level of financial support to all accepted students who are not receiving aid from outside sources.

Explore Your Options

We encourage you to start your financial aid research early to maximize your options. For your convenience, we have provided a few resources for those students entering the MALS program in need of financial assistance and funding opportunities. We encourage all of our students to visit the Costs & Funding page on the Graduate School site.

MALS offers tuition support for:

  • Teachers
  • Fulbright scholars
  • Recent UM alumni (through UAccelerate)
  • Veterans and their families
  • UM employees and dependents (tuition remission)
  • Student Athletes (through the Athletics Dept)

Teacher Incentive Program

MALS is proud to offer 50% off tuition for any current or retired PreK-12 public, private, or charter school teacher, or anyone currently teaching at the community college-level.  Proof of employment or a copy of your teaching certificate will be requested in order to determine eligibility.  For more information, please contact admissions at MALSadmissions@miami.edu.

Special Funding for LASPAU Fulbright Scholars

MALS supports students who apply through the LASPAU administered Fulbright Program, which provides grants to individuals from Latin America and the Caribbean for graduate study in the United States. Partial tuition waivers are offered and, on rare occasions, a student can be supported through a full scholarship.

UAccelerate for UM Alumni

Recent graduates of the University of Miami who apply to the MALS program have the opportunity to receive tuition waivers for up to 40% of their graduate study (12 credits of a 30-credit program) if they attend full time. Students can email the MALS admissions officer at MALSadmissions@miami.edu for eligibility criteria.

For Veterans and Their Families

Yellow Ribbon Program - The University of Miami is an active participant in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program. This provision of the post 9/11 GI Bill helps cover the expenses of earning a master's degree. Opportunities for study are available for active-duty personnel as well. Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces are encouraged to visit the official site for the program.

Tuition Waivers

Our pledge is to provide partial tuition waivers to ALL accepted students who are not receiving full funding from outside sources. Tuition waivers are, essentially, tuition discounts, and the amount varies by semester, but typically ranges from 25-40%. Both international and domestic applicants are eligible for tuition waivers, unless you are receiving funding from an external source. It is important to discuss these options with the admissions officer. Please indicate on your application if you would like to be considered for financial aid. No additional documentation is needed.

Tuition Remission for UM Employees, Spouses, and Dependents

MALS participates in UM’s Tuition Remission program for eligible UM employees.  For more information, please visit https://my.hr.miami.edu/benefits-and-wellness/work-life/tuition-benefits/index.html.

Athletic Scholarships

MALS is proud to support many graduate transfers, graduate assistants, and fifth-year student athletes, so that they may remain eligible to participate in athletics as part of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), NCAA Division I.   Our own head football coach, Mario Cristobal (BBA ’93, MALS ’99), completed the MALS program when he served as a graduate assistant for then-head coach Butch Davis in 1998-99. Many top athletes have graduated from the MALS program, including D’Eric King, Lou Hedley, and Jose Borregales.

Athletic Scholarship information can be found by contacting the appropriate University of Miami coach.  Visit the Hurricane Athletics website or our Athletics and Recreation FAQs for additional information.

Graduate Assistantships in Student Affairs

The University of Miami Office of Student Affairs offers any graduate student to the opportunity to apply to serve as a graduate assistant in a student affairs area or partner area. Based on the individual department, students may engage in program development and planning, student advising, administrative support, student mentoring, supervising, and more. Becoming a graduate assistant enables you to apply the theory you learn in your graduate program into practice.

External Scholarships

American Association of University Women - All women are eligible to apply for the fellowships offered by this organization. Fellowships include American Fellowships, Career Development Grants, Selected Professions Fellowships, University Scholar-in-Residence Community Action Grants and International Fellowships.

Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs (AGLSP) - The University of Miami is an active participant in the AGLSP.   They also offer Student Writing Awards which may be given to any current student or recent graduate (up to one-year post-graduation) of an AGLSP institutional member program in good standing.
